Orange Sugar Cookies

Great Cut Out Cookies

These orange sugar cookies were a staple around Halloween in my home.  As I chat about in Harvest or Halloween my family did a party for the elderly of the neighborhood on Halloween to help them feel safe and loved.  These were always a hit!  I loved helping my mom roll them out and bake them.  Now I get to share those memories with my children.

We still do them as pumpkins to enjoy around the fall harvest or for Thanksgiving.  Or they make cute leaves as well.  If you’re wanting them for a different season just change the juice to change the color.

We like to do a cranberry juice around Valentine’s Day as well.  If you look at the photo below you’ll see the orange juice cookie on the left and the cranberry juice cookie on the left.

I love the slight hint of flavor the juice gives these and they don’t need icing!  You can ice if you prefer though and we definitely have in the past.

Play with them and have fun!

Orange Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

4 cups flour(all-purpose or a gluten-free blend)-if gluten-free make sure to add 1 tsp xantham or guar
          gum
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 Tb orange rind
1 cup butter
1-3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/4 cup concentrated frozen orange juice(thawed)

Sift together flour, b. powder, and salt.

Set aside.

Cream butter and sugar, beat in eggs.

Stir in orange juice and grated orange rind.

Add flour mixture and chill 3 to 4 hours or overnight.

The dough will be soft.

On floured surface roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut(I prefer a thicker cookie of about 1/2 to 3/4 inch) with choice of a cookie cutter.

Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 10 minutes.

If you make these cookies I’d love to hear what things you’ve tweaked and how they turned out for you.  We make them around Harvest each year.  You can read more about how we celebrate Harvest HERE

Yummy! I bet you could substitute lemon for the orange. Either way…yummy!

I’ve not done lemon but we love doing cranberry for a slightly pink colored cookie.
